Sarah Teather MP visited St Mungo's hostel on Pound Lane in Brent today in order to view the plans for an innovatively designed 84-bed hostel on the site.
The existing 78-bed hostel managed by the charity in Pound Lane, Willesden, will be demolished and an 84-bed hostel will be built on the site. The planning application by St Mungo's for the building has been approved by Brent Council, and funding of £5m has been agreed by the Housing Corporation.
Churchill Hui Architects has drawn up a design which includes 'living screens' made of climbing plants on the south, east and west faces of the building. There will also be a green roof and solar panels; and there is provision for a wind turbine-powered illuminated screen, similar to a public art installation, on the north face.
Redeveloping the building will contribute to Brent Council's Supporting People Strategy 2005-2010, which aims to modernise hostel accommodation in the borough by working with partner organisations.
Councillor James Allie, Lead Member for Housing and Customer Services said:
"The completed hostel will greatly improve standards of accommodation for homeless people in the borough, and increase the range of provision. It is also an exciting and innovative design which will enhance the local area and be a landmark piece of architecture. I wish the development every success."
Stuart Bakewell, St Mungo's Area Manager for Brent, said: "Pound Lane hostel is to become a flagship project for us. Investing in light and innovative physical environments is proven to really help homeless men and women move forward more quickly and more successfully with their recovery. We are very much looking forward to the project's completion."
Building work is expected to start this April and the building will be complete in 2010.
